What is Artism & Why does it exist?

The Short Answer

Artism is a project dedicated to celebrating the unique gifts of autism through art.

The Long Answer

The artist known simply as RMC, who now also refers to himself as an “Autist”, is an autistic individual who has discovered and developed a deep, special interest surrounding watercolour art. In celebration of this newfound interest and unique way of expression, he has subsequently set up the Artism project to celebrate the vast array of gifts that autism can bring.

RMC says: “This gift that I have found has given me a new sense of unpacking and expressing the emotions that I have previously struggled with over the years. My gift has, in turn, given me many more gifts, and I, therefore, want to give something back to others in return.”

The Artism project will showcase the artist’s highly unique, one-of-a-kind paintings, which give first-hand insights into the wondrous world of autism. They are then made publicly available for purchase as limited edition prints. Each item will come with an original certificate of authenticity as well as a personal story and a heartfelt note of gratitude from the artist himself.

In addition to receiving a beautifully crafted piece of artwork, you will also be giving something in return as all proceeds from the project will be used to help aid autistic individuals and their parents or carers. With a stroke of luck, hopefully, they go on to develop a passion of their own.

A brief interview with the artist

Get to know RMC a little bit better…

So, RMC, how would you describe yourself?

“I know what I look like, so I don’t have to, and so haven’t. But if you want me to, I would say ‘tall, large, hairy and gentle!’”

Why do you love art so much?

“Why wouldn’t I? The process is relaxing, my thoughts emerge on paper, and they are born from my feelings. The end result gives me a sense of pride and achievement, and it also seems to make people smile, which I think is joy’s way of painting people’s faces.”

Which is your favourite painting?

“The one that I haven’t painted yet!”

If you could have one wish, what would it be?

“For my parents to still be here. My Mum was always my biggest fan, so I would love for her to see my art. The same for my Dad, too, as he was always my biggest critic! Between my Mum and Dad lies the truth. If I asked my Mum, ‘Is my art any good?’, she would simply tell me that it is fabulous! If I asked my Dad, he would tell me how to make it much better! Mum also used to make the best apple crumble ever, and Dad was brilliant to take to parties – as I could hide and he would take the limelight! He would have been useful at my art exhibitions, that is for sure.”

And how far do you hope to take Artism?

“Well, the sky’s the limit! This is a passion project of mine, one which is highly personal and enjoyable both for me and those who I aim to help. It’s also going to be a rewarding experience – one in which I know I will cherish for the rest of my life. Whatever the journey may bring, I will welcome the challenge and opportunity with open arms.”
